Close Any Apps Running in the Background.
Applications, software and programs are all working in the background of your Mac, even when you’re not using it. You can increase the performance of your Mac by a huge amount by killing these processes.
To do this open Finder > Go > Utilities. Open ‘ Activity Monitor ‘ by double-clicking it in the list and it will show you statistics about how many resources impact application tasks are talking on your Mac ( CPU, Memory, Energy, Disk, Network ). Double-click an entry to find out more. You can force the process to stop by clicking ‘Quit’.
Turn Off Login Items
If your Mac is slow when you first power it on, but then runs efficiently from then it may be that you have a long list of programs and processes all starting up automatically at switch on.
Open system preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items. Click the lock at the bottom of the window to make changes. The items in the list are processes that automatically start when you log in. If these programs aren’t needed as soon as you login, they’re slowing down start-up. Select them and click the ‘_’ button to remove them. The fewer programs that start when you login, the quicker you startup will be.
Clear Your Hard Drive Space or Add an External Drive
A quick and easy fix for computer speed and overall performance is clearing space on your hard drive. As your drive gets increasingly full of files, you may experience it becoming slower. Eventually, you may even see the ” Your disk is almost full ” message. At this point, there may not be enough space on your Mac to store temporary files needed for the programs that you’re trying to use – you need to free up some space.
Clear Out Your Cache
All of those temporary files stored in your cache from your visits to different sites let you browse the internet faster, but they do add up and that can impact on the speed of your Mac in general. All you need to do is go to your cache folder by entering -/Library/Caches > click Go > click command-A to select all folders > click command delete > enter your password into the popup window that will ask you to confirm you want to delete all of the files.
Keep MacOS Updated
